Installing Dropwheel

Dropwheel runs on macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

1. Install

  1. Download Dropwheel.dmg and open it.
  2. Drag Dropwheel onto the Applications folder in the window that appears.
  3. Eject the Dropwheel disk with the ⏏ button next to it in the Finder sidebar.

2. Open it the first time

Dropwheel is sold directly, not through the App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm it once:

  1. Open Dropwheel from your Applications folder. macOS says it can’t verify the app. Click Done.
  2. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to “Dropwheel” was blocked to protect your Mac, click Open Anyway.
  3. Enter your Mac password, then click Open Anyway once more.

Dropwheel then opens normally, now and every time after.

The Open Anyway button only shows for about an hour after you first tried to open the app. If you don’t see it, open Dropwheel from Applications again, then go back to Privacy & Security.

3. Start using it

Dropwheel lives in the menu bar. Start dragging a file and press ⇧, ⌘ or ⌃ to open the wheel, then drop the file on a slice. The wheel needs no special permission.

The first time you use a few actions, macOS asks once whether Dropwheel may control another app. Click Allow:

4. Enter your license

After buying, open the Dropwheel menu in the menu bar, choose Settings… › License, paste the key from your receipt email and click Activate.

Uninstalling

Quit Dropwheel from its menu bar icon and move it from Applications to the Trash. To use your license on another Mac, first click Deactivate on This Mac in Settings › License.
